What options are available abroad?
The rising cost of medical education in India has forced many students to explore alternative education options abroad. Countries like Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Philippines and Bangladesh offer more affordable options. According to the 15th Finance Commission report, the number of Indian students pursuing medical studies abroad increased from 3,438 in 2015 to 12,321 in 2019. The total cost in Bangladesh ranges from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, while in the Philippines it is around Rs 35 lakh. Students in Russia can complete their MBBS in around Rs 20 lakh including hostel expenses.

The biggest attraction for Indian students in Bangladesh is the high level medical education there. About 25 percent of the seats in medical colleges in Bangladesh are reserved for non-Bangladeshi students. Therefore, it is easy for Indian students to get a place in good colleges. Furthermore, medical colleges in Bangladesh provide quality education at a much lower cost than Indian institutions. Like students going to Ukraine or Armenia, many Indian students find Bangladesh an attractive destination for medical education due to its low costs and proximity to home.

Why is Bangladesh a popular choice?
There are many reasons to pursue MBBS in Bangladesh that make it attractive. There are renowned and low-cost private medical colleges in Bangladesh with comprehensive curriculum and reputed teachers. The medium of instruction is English, hence Indian students are comfortable with the language. The MBBS curriculum of Bangladesh is very similar to the medical curriculum of India. Due to which Indian students understand the subjects, books and method of study properly. The admissions process is streamlined and many institutions are accredited throughout Southeast Asia. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recognized seven universities of Bangladesh. The World Health Organization (WHO) also recognizes these universities for their quality curriculum and teaching methodology. With more patients in hospitals, practical exposure is better. However, the infrastructure in some colleges is not as advanced as in India.

The high fees for medical studies in India is a major hurdle. The cost of studying MBBS in India can range from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, with private medical colleges charging fees up to crores of rupees. In contrast, the cost of medical studies in Bangladesh is around Rs 25 to 30 lakh. An average Indian can afford this fee. Which includes college fees and hostel-living expenses. Also, the acceptability of Bangladeshi MBBS degree in India makes it an attractive option for many people.

Proximity and cultural similarity are also reasons
The climate, weather, culture, food and lifestyle of Bangladesh are similar to many parts of India. Due to which students find it easier to study and live. Cultural proximity, similarity of Hindi-Bengali language and short distance from India helps the students to adjust easily. Direct admission is available after qualifying NEET and 25-40 percent seats are reserved for foreign students. Due to the recognition of NMC/WHO, the level of education there is considered good. Especially in terms of practical training and FMGE pass percentage, which is better than the Indian average.

How many Indian medical students in Bangladesh?
More than 9,000 Indian students were studying in medical colleges in Bangladesh in 2024-25, which is a major share of the total foreign students. Every year 7,000–10,000 new students go to Bangladesh, mainly from eastern India. The number of medical colleges increased from 43 in 2019 to 61 in 2022. Around 8,000-12,000 Indian students are studying medical and other courses in Bangladesh.
