Johannesburg: South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, while talking about the comments made during the recent tour of India, said that Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant had apologized for an offensive comment. He also admitted that South Africa coach Shukri Conrad should have avoided making comments like ‘bringing India to its knees’.

On this tour consisting of two Tests, three ODIs and five T20 Internationals, South Africa won the longer format in India after 25 years, but then lost the white ball series. Bavuma wrote in his column on ‘ESPNcricinfo’:

I know there was an incident with me where he said something about me in his own language but at the end of the day two senior players Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah came and apologised. When the apology was given I had no idea what it was about. I didn,t hear it at the time and I had to talk to my media manager about it. What happens on the field, stays on the field, but you don,t forget what was said. You use it as motivation, but there is no animosity. ,

He then talked about Conrad’s comments during the second Test in Guwahati in which the coach had said that the visiting team wanted to bring the Indian team to its knees. Conrad later apologized and Bavuma said he also felt his coach should have used better words. He said:

Shukri also had to face criticism for his comments. I was under a lot of pressure from the media and was being asked to clarify my comments. I felt Shukri was the person best placed to give context to all this.

Bavuma said, ‘I didn’t like it when I first heard about it, but it just reminded me how difficult and competitive the Test series was and what it meant to some players in the team. Shukri spoke after the ODI series and put an end to that issue. Later he said that he could have chosen better words and I agreed with him.
