Hyderabad. The historic Bam-Rukn-ud-Daula pond of Hyderabad, which has been facing the brunt of decades of neglect and illegal encroachments, has now completely changed. After an extensive restoration campaign led by Hydra, the lake has reached its final form and is set to be opened to the general public in January 2026.

Built in the year 1770, this lake is about 255 years old. It was constructed by Nawab Rukn-ud-Daula, the Prime Minister of the third Nizam Sikandar Jah. According to historical records, the water of this lake was so clean and pure that it was used as drinking water for the Nizam’s royal family and the Chowmahalla Palace. This lake was considered an important part of the water supply system of Hyderabad at that time.

Lake shrunk due to encroachment, expanded again
At one time this lake was spread over an area of ​​about 104 acres, but due to years of encroachment and neglect, its area was reduced to only 4.12 acres. Hydra Commissioner A.V. According to Ranganath, a large-scale campaign to remove encroachment and clean up was launched in August 2024. After this campaign, the lake has been expanded to about 18 acres. This entire revival project has cost approximately Rs 9.75 crore.

New picnic spot equipped with modern facilities
The lake has been developed not just as a water body but as a community and public space. Attractive walking paths have been built around the lake and benches have been installed to sit. A separate play area for children and open air gym facility for adults has been developed. Keeping in mind the culture of the old city, glimpses of Islamic architecture have been included in the beautification. CCTV cameras have been installed in the entire campus for security and native and medicinal plants have been planted.

Environment and water conservation will benefit

The revival of this lake will not only promote tourism but will also play an important role in improving the groundwater level of the area. Inlet and outlet channels have been strengthened for flood control, so that there is no problem of waterlogging in the surrounding colonies during rains.
